Data Centers and the American Power Gap

The single most repeated question in data center development right now is not where to build. It is where power can actually be delivered, and when.

Sites that would have been developed in eighteen months a decade ago now face multi-year waits for adequate service. Developers are relocating projects across state lines to chase available capacity, and utilities are being asked to approve load additions that rival the consumption of a mid-sized city.

The Scale of the Ask

AI training and inference workloads consume power at densities the industry has not planned around historically. Racks that once drew a handful of kilowatts now draw many times that. Campuses that once needed tens of megawatts now request hundreds.

That is not an incremental change in the load profile. It is a different kind of customer, arriving all at once, in regions where generation and transmission were already tight.

Bridging Instead of Waiting

The practical response has been staged power. Operators bring the first phase of a campus online with on-site generation, prove the load, and grow into permanent utility service as it becomes available.

This approach does two useful things. It lets revenue start earlier, which improves the economics of the entire project. And it gives the utility a real, metered load curve to plan around instead of a forecast.

It also requires discipline. Fuel supply, emissions permitting, maintenance intervals, and redundancy all have to be engineered up front, not improvised after the first phase energizes.

Why This Is a National Question

Compute capacity is becoming a measure of national industrial strength, in the same way steel output and refining capacity once were. If American data center projects stall on power while other countries build without that constraint, the workloads move.

Keeping pace means building the power, the equipment fleets that support it, and eventually the fuels that run it, inside the United States. Those are not three separate industries. They are one supply chain, and it either exists here or it does not.

The Practical Takeaway

Developers who treat power as a procurement item late in the process are the ones losing schedule. Developers who treat it as a first-order design constraint, alongside land and fiber, are the ones energizing on time.

The gap between the two is measured in years of lost revenue.
